「ゴルトベルク」

「時の終わりのための四つの物語」というのは、自分が手がけている四つの連作物語のうちのはじまりの作品である。さらに言うと、最初「ゴルトベルク」ができあがり、それに関連するように「十日後」が生まれ、それに続いて「森の中」という物語へと続いている。
これら三つの作品が一応の完成を見たあたりで、ふと自分は高校生の時に好きだった作曲家メシアンの「世の終わりのための四重奏曲」のことを思い出した。
日本では「世界の終わり」という意味のように意訳されているが、原題は
Quatuor pour la Fin du Tempsすなわち「時の終わり」である。（「Fin」は「終わり」で「Temps」は「時」）
そのうちの第三楽章には「鳥たちの深淵」というタイトルのクラリネットの独奏曲がある。
高校生の時に自分が好きだったのはこの楽章で、これを聴くたびにゆるやかな落下感というか、時が止まったようなイメージを受けるのだった。
かつてそのイメージをもとに詩を書いたことすらあった。
深夜、深い森の中で鳥たちは目を閉じたまま緩やかに落下していく、というイメージを描いたものだったが、それを読んだ批評家でもある友人は
「安っぽい」と一蹴した。読む価値がないとも。
それはそれで傷ついたし、その友人とは別の件で一切の連絡を断ち切ったが、それでも今でもやはりこのイメージが自分の中に根強く残っていて、どこかで絵にしてもいいかもしれないとすら思っている。
それはともかく自分の連作はメシアンに端を発していると言ってもいい。メシアンの方は八楽章だが、物語をそこまで広げる力もないので、自分の方は四つで終わる予定である。
予定である、というのは実のところまだ最後の物語がまったく存在しておらず、これを書いている今もまだ頭のなかにぼんやりとイメージがあるだけで、どうなるか自分自身も見通しがつかない状況だからだ。とはいえ必ず着地するという自信だけはある。ついでにいうと、内容は一切メシアンとは関係はない。
"About Goldberg"
"Four Stories for the End of Time" is the first of a series of four stories that I am working on. Furthermore, "Goldberg" was completed first, and "Ten Days Later" was born in relation to it, followed by the story "In the Woods".
Around the time when these three works were almost completed, he suddenly remembered Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of the World," which he liked when he was a high school student.
In Japan, it is paraphrased to mean "the end of the world", but the original title is

Among them, the third movement has a clarinet solo titled "Abyss of the Birds".
When he was in high school, he liked this movement, and every time he listened to it, he felt a gentle descent, or rather, an image of time stopping.
He even once wrote a poem based on that image.
It depicts an image of birds slowly falling with their eyes closed in a deep forest at midnight.

Be that as it may, you can say that my series of works originated from Messiaen. Messiaen has eight movements, but he doesn't have the power to expand the story that far, so I plan to end with four.
It is planned because the final story has not yet existed at all, and even now as I write this, I still have a vague image in my head, and I myself have no idea what will happen. Because there is no situation. However, he is confident that he will definitely land. Incidentally, the content has nothing to do with Messiaen.
