Spiral

There is the concept of multiplication. It's simple arithmetic. Four times two equals eight, and three times two equals six. The same applies to negative numbers: negative two times three equals negative six. The symbol “×” expands the number it operates on. This symbol exists precisely because it performs that function.

It must have been about fifteen years ago when I started occasionally pondering “What am I?” It's not something I think about constantly; rather, I turn my attention to it when I'm in a state within daily life where I can bear such thoughts. Yet, as I continue, what resembles a conclusion keeps getting updated.

“I” is self-awareness. Therefore, it perceives the external world through the five senses: eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and skin. When in deep sleep or under general anesthesia, this self-awareness is absent, so ‘I’ does not exist. This is the so-called unconscious state. Literally, consciousness is “nothing” in this state, so it cannot normally be grasped. It resembles non-existence and is akin to death.

This remains the fundamental idea.

Moreover, this self-awareness activated through the five senses naturally changes with age and circumstances. The sensory cells of a three-year-old differ from those of an adult, so even receiving the same information would elicit different responses. I no longer hear mosquito sounds.

Furthermore, if part of the body is lost due to an accident, the world perceived changes. Humans can also develop certain senses, making them more refined. Experts specialize in using their senses for specific fields. For instance, a master angler sees something different from an amateur looking at the same pond.

What I want to emphasize is this: if “I” is something activated through the five senses, then it is not fixed but dynamic. There's a term called “dynamic equilibrium.” Even if a river appears as a line, the water within is constantly being replaced. Similarly, the internal state is always changing, yet the whole appears stable.

This is the “I” as a living being. This unstable “I” interacts with and reacts to the external world. Considering this as a whole, I now understand ‘I’ as a “pattern of behavior” toward the external world.

How does a person behave in response to external stimuli?

The multiplication symbol “×” embodies such behavior. Similarly, I react to the external world. I draw near to things I like and keep my distance from others.

Of course, humans exhibit far more complex behavioral patterns, but fundamentally, the “survival instinct” exists first, and various behaviors branch out from it. We seek to distance ourselves from what we dislike and draw near to what we find pleasant. This aligns with Spinoza's concept of the “power of self-preservation (conatus).” When this power increases, we feel ‘pleasure’ and deem it good; when it diminishes, we feel “displeasure” and deem it bad.

Regardless of Spinoza's standards of good and evil, which diverged from the Christian worldview of his time, this too is a fundamental pattern of human behavior. Simply put, we call the differences in the detailed behavioral patterns derived from this “individuality.”

Therefore, if one became a completely different person (if one could change their behavior toward the external world), the world would change.

Our reactions to the external world shape the impression of “me.” Consequently, this impression possesses the character of something recognizable from the outside. Naturally, a discrepancy arises between self-perception—by the agent of the behavior (where the reaction likely precedes, followed by a slightly delayed recognition of one's own action)—and external recognition.

Let me illustrate with an image.

A jelly-like membrane surrounds us. Suppose you feel something and express the emotion “happiness.” At that moment, the jelly around you slightly distorts that expressed emotion before releasing it outward. People who see it perceive it further distorted through their own jelly. It's like a game of telephone. The original, unaltered thing never reaches others as it was.

Or.

You're writing at a table in a nighttime cafe. Not for anyone in particular. You simply can't settle otherwise. Something utterly unbelievable has happened to you. To at least calm your own flustered self, you try to translate the event into words, to fix your surroundings with language and make them understandable.

Seeing your expression or the frantic movement of your fingers on the keyboard, someone else might judge you as being swamped with work. Or they might think you're just pretending to be busy at a cafe.

It's impossible for people to fully understand others. It's a relationship between things maintaining a dynamic equilibrium. They are constantly changing each other.

If we assume patterns exist, I think our relationship with the world takes the shape of a spiral. What exists now was once before, and what exists now will eventually be the future. The world is surely raw material that can become anything, but how we perceive and understand it depends entirely on our own actions.

Patterns exist. I desire something, I crave something. When a similar situation arises, I act the same way. Events from the past come back again now.

I believe there is an unchanging “us,” and it is not that the world coincidentally traces a spiral, but rather that we ourselves repeat the same actions (because that is our very essence) and thus elicit the same kind of response again. That is how I see the world.

And there's an expectation that the spiral's circle will gradually grow larger, then eventually shrink. Kenzaburo Oe used the phrase “the spindle shape of life” – he thought human life, like a spindle, starts small, then swells large, and shrinks again (probably considering natural aging and death, not sudden accidents or illness) – and I might be influenced by that.

I met that person. And now I can no longer meet them.

There was something I wanted to do. And now its appeal has faded.

A new job began. But soon I will grow accustomed to it too.

Outwardly, such events occur. The “I” experiencing them seeks stimulation in encounters with others, seeks stimulation in events I want to do. One could say the pattern of seeking stimulation is the same.

And so people seek, obtain the corresponding results, and live on, influenced by them. Time flows equally for us all.

And the circle gradually shrinks. Time steadily diminishes.

What can be obtained constantly changes. One might see it as people letting go of these things. And someday, like when we were born, we return to zero.

Becoming zero.

And then nothing remains again. What lies beyond is an untouchable realm.
