Strange Tales

For a time, true ghost stories were all the rage, and I became quite absorbed in them.

The core of their appeal lies in the fact that they are “true stories.” I was drawn to the sense that “something might have really happened.”

〇 A story from the local temple priest. Shortly after the war, the priest returned from a visit to the shrine and saw a girl playing in front of the temple wall. As night was approaching, he called out to her, but she vanished right before his eyes. Later, he realized she was a child who had been brought to the temple and died during the air raids of the war.

〇 My mother had a dream. In the dream, she was walking through the city where she lived when she heard someone calling her name from a friend's house. She had a gut feeling that there was a “black person” inside, and woke up with a bad feeling. Later, she heard that on the day she had the dream, the owner of that house had hanged himself because of debt. The house was unoccupied for a while, but eventually became a parking lot.

〇 When I was in middle school, I was listening to music when I suddenly felt that “someone was in the room.” The next moment, the volume knob on the stereo turned by itself, and the sound suddenly jumped up. As I hurriedly turned down the volume, I had another premonition and told my mother, “There's going to be a noise outside now.” At that moment, the garage door outside the house slammed shut with a loud bang.

There are one or two ghost stories in our neighborhood, but they are short, and many of them lack coherence or a clear conclusion. However, that is precisely what makes them interesting. Like candy, as you read one after another, you begin to think that there may be something you don't know about the world. The interesting thing about true ghost stories is that they give you a glimpse of that possibility.

The request to interview me about true ghost stories came in early July of this year, when I was ill and bedridden.

That said, someone like me, with no name recognition, wouldn't normally receive such a request from a general literary magazine. It wasn't through X's DM, nor through the email address listed on my website, but rather through a direct message from an acquaintance.

The woman in question is a rare individual who has been able to make a living by regularly exhibiting her work at galleries and selling her paintings online since her days as an art student. She apparently has a dedicated fan base, and this request came from one of her fans, a manga artist.

In short, it seemed that the manga artist wanted ideas for a new horror manga he was planning to draw. Even though he was a manga artist, in today's world where there are so many manga artists, I didn't know the name of this person because I didn't know much about recent manga.

“Well, it's just a rich person's hobby,” my acquaintance said. The person isn't that good at drawing, and he can't come up with ideas on his own. But he wants to draw something realistic. He's definitely rich. The clothes he always wears are also super expensive brands, so yeah, it's just a hobby.

I agreed to do it on the condition that I wouldn't have to meet the aspiring manga artist directly.

I'll do the interview properly. But I made it clear that I only want the material and don't want any further involvement. Getting involved with such a wealthy person and being asked for feedback on their work would be a hassle, and besides, I have a long-held dream of writing a novel and having it published in a general magazine. For that reason, I want to write a new work to submit. This kind of work is not what I truly want to do.

That said, at the time, I needed money. All the tests and hospital visits were costing more than I expected. Having a little extra in my bank account would have been a relief.

The manga artist referred to themselves as “Teu.”

When I mentioned that it was an unusual name, they simply replied, “It's taken from my grandmother's name.” I didn't even know if they were male or female, and since communication was only via email, there were many unclear points. It could be said that this was mutual.

The reason I commissioned you this time was because you had written some novel-like pieces online (they did indeed use the term “novel-like” in their message). The two reasons were that I heard from your friend that your residence is near F Mansion, and that you had written some novel-like pieces online.

The job is to observe F Mansion for ten days. Even though it's based on a true story, I can't use the actual name of the mansion, so

I'm considering calling it “Ten Days at a Certain A Mansion,” he explained.

I want you to go to the mansion at least twice a day—at 8 PM after work and at 2 AM—and observe it. If you feel anything, write it down as well. The fee is 20,000 yen per day, including writing fees and rights, totaling 200,000 yen.

This contract was made via email. Honestly, it was more than I had expected. If it hadn't been from an acquaintance, I wouldn't have trusted the amount, but the next day, 100,000 yen was deposited into my account as a down payment.

Going to the F Mansion, as “Teu” said, wasn't difficult for me. It's only a fifteen-minute bike ride along the main street of the city, “Kitakawara-dori.”

I went to check it out on a Sunday afternoon before the observation, and F Mansion was a three-story reinforced concrete building. It wasn't on the outskirts of town but was simply located along the main street.

The first floor facing the street had once been a store. The gaps in the weathered shutters were filled with dust, clearly indicating they hadn't been opened in a long time. The keyholes were rusted shut.

From the front, it wasn't clear, but the entire first floor wasn't a store; part of it was an open space. It was a piloti structure, which was popular in the past, and was probably used as a parking lot. When I entered the shade, the air temperature dropped, and it felt as if the outside noise had suddenly quieted down. It was as if someone had turned down the volume in my ears.

As I climbed the short stairs from the entrance, I saw a rusty electrical panel on my right. As I absentmindedly ran my fingers over the rough, rusty surface, I noticed a stainless steel mailbox next to it. None of the rooms had nameplates, and the mailboxes were empty.

I could have continued up the stairs to the front of each room, but considering that there might be residents, I decided to turn back and go around to the back of the building.

From there, I could see five rooms lined up on each floor's outer corridor.

The front doors with newspaper boxes attached below were clearly old-fashioned. I recalled that there had been no explanation from “Teu” about the residents, but what caught my attention was the dirty washing machine placed in the corridor of the corner room on the second floor. I couldn't understand why someone would wash clothes on the outer corridor.

I started observing the next night.

I usually leave work around 6:30 p.m., so if I eat dinner somewhere and then ride my bike to the apartment building, I can easily make it by 8 p.m. At this time, the streets are still bright and there are many people passing by.

When I went there at night, I realized that no one lived there. There was no sign of light in the windows or on the exterior corridors. When I looked at the back of the building during the day, I saw some curtains in the windows, but they were still dark.

I didn't tell “Teu,” but on the day he told me about the F apartment building, I searched for it on the accident property website “Oshima Teru.” I thought that since there was a request, something might have happened here, but there was nothing listed. I was curious about why it was the F apartment building, but even if I asked, “Teu” wouldn't answer.

Sitting quietly in front of the room with the washing machine on the second floor, it felt like this area was submerged in a large shadow. It seemed like time was flowing one beat behind here.

For the first few days, I was fine because I was expecting something, but by the third day, my body started to feel the strain.

The 8 PM shift was no problem, but the 2 AM shift was the worst.

There was regular work at the company. After finishing the 2 AM observation, I returned to my room, took a shower, and went to bed around 3:30 AM, sometimes as late as 4:30 AM. I would sleep for a little while, wake up at 7:30 AM, and go to work, but during the day, I couldn't shake the feeling of fatigue.

 Izawa-san, are you tired?

The office girl asked that because I kept getting up from my desk to wash my face and hands.

When I answered that I was sleep-deprived, she smiled.

She looked just like a fox.

So I changed my approach a little. There were no specific instructions regarding the observation time, so I could have checked for a few minutes and left, but since I was being paid, I felt uncomfortable cutting corners. In the end, I decided that observing for about half an hour was the honest thing to do. I wrote a report on my smartphone every five minutes. That way, I didn't get bored, and I didn't have to linger around.

"Nothing/Nothing/No change/ nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing—nothing

I felt bad that I was getting paid for this, but my female friend replied, “Don't worry about it.”

Ghosts don't just appear like that. But you did your job properly, and you got paid, right?

That's right, so I sent the report, which could hardly be called a report, to “Teu” with mixed feelings.

“Good interview,” came the reply from “Teu,” and the remaining 100,000 yen was transferred as promised.

A body was discovered in that apartment.

Around 7:20 a.m. on July 23, a colleague from her workplace discovered the body of Izawa Teu (32), a childcare worker, in a room of an apartment in D-cho, S-ku, K-city, and called 110. According to the S Police Station, there were signs that Izawa had hanged herself in the room, but there were also multiple wounds on her abdomen. The colleague who discovered her had visited her home because she had been absent from work without permission since the 12th. Izawa lived alone, and the front door was unlocked. The police are investigating both the possibility of a crime and suicide.

When I saw the article on the internet, I hurriedly called my female friend. However, it was her boyfriend who answered the phone, and the conversation didn't make sense.

“I'm sorry, but did you dial the wrong number?” I said repeatedly.

“It's the wrong number!” I said, but unfortunately, he didn't understand.

“We do not have an employee named Izawa at our company.”

“He's here.”

“If you continue, I'll have to call the police...”

Sweat trickled down my neck, but it wasn't just my neck—my armpits and back were soaked in sweat as well.

The room was small. The air conditioner was off, and the windows were closed, making it even hotter.

People always look at my room and say, “There's nothing here,” and are amazed. There's only a box of tissues in the middle of the room. It's for wiping sweat.

If the sweat gets too bad, it will definitely seep through. Everything about the part-time job and “Teu.”

What should I do then? Should I tell the police, reveal my past, or start from the fact that I was bullied in class? Or, since a phone number is just a combination of numbers, should I keep searching for female friends and calling them?

Anyway, since I'm working as a childcare worker, I have to be careful about such things. It was the same in elementary school. If you don't behave properly, you get targeted.

You get ignored, your hair pulled, spit on your desk, things hidden. But no one tries to get close to that relationship. If you ask for help, you admit you're a pathetic loser and things get worse. So you have to act it out well.

When the teacher asked, “What are you doing? It's noisy,” I quickly answered, “Just playing.”

“Really? Izawa-kun, is this play?”

“Yes.”

Even though it's the same classroom, the color of the light hitting it is different.

Even though they have the same faces, they all have different names.

“This is probably connected,” said my female friend, who is a painter. “All kinds of things are connected. Your past, the nursery teacher who hanged herself in that room, the bullies who tormented you... and so on?”

“So you're saying I stabbed him?”

He didn't answer.

His painter friend was always mean. She would suddenly disappear at the last moment and push him away.

So he decided he had to tell everyone himself. He had to muster the courage to tell everyone he didn't stab him. Otherwise, he would become the murderer of that suicide victim.

I’ll have to go back to F Apartment again. The corner room with the washing machine. I need to check what was inside that washing machine. Plus, I forgot to confirm whether the door was properly closed. I think I closed it, but what if it’s still open? If it’s closed, I’ll open it. If it’s open, I’ll close it.

But I think the door is open. There, I’ll probably figure something out. Everything will become clear and come together neatly. That day. Today. And from now on.

August 15, 2026.

August 15, 2026!

In front of the corner room door, there is a black backpack stained with water. The metal hardware glints dully. The leather surface is dirty with saliva and mud.

In the end,

this is my strange tale.
