Supernova
“I” do not exist.
I've been saying this for quite some time now, and I truly believe it myself. Yet, if pinched, it hurts, and if asked whether I can remain calm when faced with the unexpected, the answer is no. You might say, “Then surely ‘I’ must exist after all,” but to be more precise, what doesn't exist is a “continuous, fixed ‘I’.”
What guarantees that “I” am “I” doesn't actually reside within myself. The seven-year-old ‘I’ and the present “I” are probably different people at the cellular level. If I were given that game I desperately wanted back then, I probably wouldn't be happy anymore; that feeling has vanished.
That's probably why people give names. A name guarantees that one is oneself. Or is it memory? Memory guarantees oneself.
I've sometimes wondered how casual memories bubble up within us.
For instance, if I visited a bookstore before and later try to recall it, what surfaces first? Is it sight? Or sound? Or touch?
I've asked others about this, and for most, sight seems to be the first thing reproduced. Meaning the scene they saw at the time reappears in their mind.
When I asked further, “Where was your viewpoint?” the answer was usually from their own subjective perspective. It felt like the first-person view often seen in games. Few seemed to recall it from a third-person perspective, as if observing their own self from the side.
Then, auditory and olfactory sensations become associated, and the memory is constructed. Like raindrops falling on water and creating ripples, each sense reconstructs the past. But areas beyond the reach of overlapping ripples certainly exist, sinking into a secret darkness of nothingness. Yet the brain seems to sometimes arbitrarily create rational memories for those gaps.
That's what I used to think.
But recently, I've come to believe that the act of recollection involves something prior to this sensory reconstruction. A sensation before language, before it manifests as vision. An indescribable feeling of having touched that world. I feel it manifests for just an instant, before it is recalled as a visual image.
It can only originate from contact with the outside world, and in a sense, I think it's like the lingering echo of the emergence of “me” at that moment.
I started thinking about these things not because I felt such astonishment at the world that I lost words.
It's probably loneliness. The loss of something I thought was mine.
I always thought it would be there. I never considered a future where it would vanish. And yet it vanishes. The tangible absence of “it having been there” is painful, sometimes accompanied by a wrenching agony as if I myself were being torn apart.
Whether through death, separation, graduation ceremonies, or retirement, what was there drifts away. The deeper the connection, the deeper the loneliness.
People say, “That's just how it is.” They say we all become adults by enduring many such sorrows, but even if that's true, it doesn't ease the pain I carry.
The “I” feeling that pain remains unconvinced somewhere deep inside. There is a selfish wish within me, a desire for the world to be warmer, to last forever.
I think the reason I cling so fiercely to this “I” isn't because of how the world works, but because I wanted to somehow deal with this “I” that insists on seeing things according to its own wishes. As long as the world's mechanisms remain unchanged, partings will come. I wanted to deal with the part of myself that inevitably feels that loneliness. That's why I wrote and thought.
I once wrote a novel titled ‘I Cool My Heart’.
Seeing the world calmly. Literally seeing it with a cooled heart.
If the unshakable truth is that things change and are constantly shifting, then rather than feeling excessive loneliness about it, accepting it. That was the attitude I wished for.
So in my case, as a means of salvation, I thought, “I do not exist.”
The people who were dreams to me would someday vanish,
and I too would become someone else's dream before fading away.
A supernova is a massive explosion occurring at the final stage of a star's life. I saw a photograph of one. Vivid colors floated in the dark universe.
After the explosion, superheated gas spreads through space, and elements emit their own light. Humans assign colors to that light, viewing it as photographs. That was the supernova reflected in my own eyes.
There is no air in outer space, so the explosion occurs in silence. The universe remains still, then suddenly light erupts. While it signifies the star's demise, the explosion scatters elements around it, eventually becoming the building blocks for new stars and life.
The people once connected to me helped create “me” and then vanished somewhere. Even trying to recall them through memory cannot recreate that very act of creation.
What lingers like an echo is the “me” that resulted from interacting with the world.
It isn't consistent; calling it a “behavior” or perhaps a “pattern” would be more accurate. How I engage with the world wasn't something I created alone; someone surely helped shape it with me.
It's nothing to be particularly proud of, yet it's precisely this recognition that allows me to feel I should cherish myself.
“I” is constantly changing, but it was made possible because others were there.
You should look back at yourself too. The dear others who made you are creating you. Those who have already vanished made you, and you are making someone else. It seems all of that culminates in the “I” that behaves as it does now.
對於我而言曾是夢想的人們,終有一天會消逝;
